Chess

We annually participate in the Lejweleputswa league as a team. Matches are played on Fridays

There are also opportunities for learners who perform well to compete for a place in the Lejweleputswa chess team. Currently 2 Riebies are part of this team.

This year the chess group consisted of a senior A and a senior B team of 6 players each. During the year approximately 20 players practiced together to contest their places in the teams.

We competed in circle B. The league consists of 6 schools in and around Welkom, as far as Marquard The A-team came 3rd in their league. The B-team came 2nd in their league.

During the year we had a friendly Chess-challenge. Games were played during break times. At the end of the knock-out rounds Thabo Mahloko was crowned as winner.

We are very proud of our two Lejweleputswa players. Christo van Staden and Thabo Mahloko were chosen for the u’19 team. They will compete in the South African Championships during December.

Cricket

The Riebies have an U/15 and an U/18 team. These teams compete in the Second league. We also often have players in the Goldfields teams. Messrs Viljoen and Bester are involved in coaching these teams.

Cross Country

Cross Country is not the most popular sport in school. It is simply the best sport in school.

Cross Country is not simply about the race. It is all about what you do to prepare for the race. It is a tightly-knit family of runners who are bound by sweat, tears and cheers.

There are no timeouts, substitutions, halftimes, or other breaks. Because of this, the sport requires extreme amounts of stamina and talent to play, and to be successful, it requires even more effort.

Cross country consists of long races over varied terrains, including hills, roads, mud puddles, grassy fields, rocky paths, and sometimes even shallow streams. To complete the race, the runners must not only have the strength to finish, but must also be aware of their surroundings at all times.

Cross Country is a team sport that requires incredible individual efforts. Individuals compete against other runners and their own PRs (personal records) over the distance. The individual runners’ scores are added up for a team score; the lower the score, the better. It is a bond between runners from opposing teams that is frayed during the heat of the race but melts into lasting friendships on the medal stand.

Cross country = a true sport

All you need is shoes, shorts and heart.

Hockey

Hockey in Riebeeckstad High school is played because we have a passion for the game.

We strive to develop players to their full potential, but what is most important for us is to enjoy the game.

In 2015 we’ve entered 3 girls’ teams into the Lejweleputswa league and one boys team. During the first term we also participate in the indoor hockey league. The players usually love the fun of it.

The boys’ team came third in the Lejweleputswa league in 2015, which is a exceptional achievement.

Netball

Riebies have 8 netball teams who participates in the bigger Lejweleputswa league. In this league there are 8 schools, thus 7 league games are played before a semi- and/or final follow with the A teams. The positions of the other teams are determined by points gained in league games. Riebies 8 teams consist of u/ 14 A and B, u/ 15 A and B, u/16 A and senior teams 1 to 3. Netball teams also play a couple of pre-season games which include the annually Fichardtpark Sport day, Frankfort Sport day, Derby against Bloemfontein High School and Wessel Maree Night series.

Riebies have 7 qualified netball coaches who renew their referee gradings every second year. The first team will be coached by Mrs Anne-lize van der Walt from 2016. At the end of a season, we also participate in the Senekal Night series during the third term, to identify a practice group for the following year. A lot of effort and hard work is done to get players fit, ready and on standard for the season and Riebies get results of good coaching by getting provincial players annually and to get through to semi- and/or finals every year.

RUGBY

In 2012 the Riebies moved to the Country Districts league due to a drop in the number of rugby players. The drop in numbers is especially evident under the Afrikaans players while the number of English players is also small. At present there are only about 22 senior players and the 2nd team consists of players gathered together on Fridays. There are 2 senior and 2 junior teams which compete in the Sandveld Country Districts League Leg 1. Four teams face each other in a dual round and the first two teams face one another in the final.

Our pre-season programme involves participation at the Fichartdpark sports day, the ‘inter’ against Bloemfontein and the Frankfort sports day. Since 2003 we have toured to Potchefstroom’s Rugby Institute and we have participated in the Senekal Evening series with our under 17 players for the past two years. This series is held during the third term.

The Riebies acquired the services of Mr Dawie de Jager, a Biokineticist, in 2015. Mr Johan Bester is the coach of the Riebies First Team. Both Messrs Bester and De Jager are involved in the training of the Country Districts U/18 Academic team. The Second Team is coached by Mr Stiaan Klue while the U/16 teams are coached by Messrs Gert Viljoen and Robert Slabber.

Since 2012 we have produced U/16 and U/18 Sandveld players as well as players who represent the Gryphons. After the Platteland tournament in Reitz 2 of our players were selected to represent the Country Districts on an overseas tour. We have 3 Gryphons representatives: 1 U/16 Gryphon Country Districts player, 1 U/16 Grant Khomo Gryphons player and 1 U/18 Gryphons Country Districts Academic player.

The Riebies are proud of the 3 Springbok Rugby players we have produced. Wynand Olivier played for the First Team in 1998-1999. The 2 Sevens Springboks, Jandré Blom (2000-2002) and Seabelo Senatla (2009-2010) also ran out for the First Team. However, none of these players played for the Gryphons Craven Week.

Soccer

Soccer is more than just a sport, its a way of life. Soccer builds character, improves physical health, and so much more. There are 11 players on the field per team during a soccer game. Each team has 10 field players and a goalkeeper.

Riebeeckstad High School together with Soccer allegiance of Troy has implemented a football program that is currently successfully established and growing day by day. In time the soccer boys will not only be a better team, but they will be better men in the future and icons for the next generation of soccer players in Riebeeckstad.

Riebeeckstad High School soccer team (Diski Dancers) have made their mark ones again in the Matjhabeng Schools Soccer League, K-Motsipe Cup and the annual derby against Bloemfontein High School. The coaches are very happy with the growth of the players in the past 2 years, and local teams in bigger leagues have scouted a total amount of 4 players from Riebeeckstad High School.

Lastly the school as well as Soccer Allegiance Of Troy would like to thank the continuous support from the parents for encouraging their kids to come to practice.
